We are guided by the teachings of karate-do founder, Master Gichin Funakoshi, and world karate advocate, Master Masatoshi Nakayama, 10th Dan. Their teachings are transmitted to us through Master Frank Woon-A-Tai.

Our programmes are based of the Dojo Kun philosophy of Character Development, Physical Education and Fitness, Self Defence, and Sport Budo (Martial Art Way). We offer International programmes for Kyu Certification, Dan (Degree) Diploma Certification, Instructor, Examiner, and Judge Licences, and GKC Coaches, tournament strategy, and Self Defence courses.

Master Frank Woon-A-Tai and Former President Jagdeo

The idea of a karate college was in response to the inclusion of karate as a component of the Physical Education Exam Syllabus in Caribbean high schools. Another motivator for the college was the need to help break the ‘cycle of crime and violence’ and help young people find direction in life; young people are attracted to the power of karate and will thus be influenced by its values.

Former President Bharrat Jagdeo, graciously granted an acre of land at Liliendaal to build the college. To date, the concrete foundation has been laid and we are awaiting the steel frame.

Congratulations Team Guyana!

Special thanks to our Sponsors; we could not have done it without your generous support!

Student of the Month

 Tyler Orderson

Tyler Orderson is the son of Waynewright Orderson and Eva Etwaroo-Orderson, both of whom played a major role in hosting the recently concluded Pan Ams.

Like any other six-year-old, Tyler attends school and is obsessed with electronic toys and video games. What sets him aside from many of his peers, however, is at the tender age of six years, he has already earned himself a karate purple belt.

Born January 17, 2004, Tyler was just around four years old when he was admitted to karate classes, under the watchful eyes of Senior Instructor Sensei Jeffrey Wong and the guidance of Instructor Sensei Chetram Mortley, run by the Guyana Karate College at the Malteenoes Dojo in Thomas Lands, Georgetown. He trains three times per week and shows exceptional concentration in class.

Tyler currently holds the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) rank of fourth kyu, having just been successful in the training sessions and grading examinations conducted by Master Frank Woon-a-Tai last July. He is now vigorously training and preparing for his upcoming grading exams scheduled for the latter part of November of this year, at which, if he is successful will earn him the elevated rank of third kyu brown belt. Other than his spirited preparations for grading examinations, Tyler thoroughly enjoyed the successful and amazing performance of his dojo team mates, as well as Team Guyana at the 11th ISKF Pan American Karate Championships, which was held August 12-15, 2010 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana. He learned a great deal from interacting with karate-kas from approximately twelve countries and observed first hand what it is takes to be an international competitor.

Tyler attends the prestigious Marian Academy where he has been exceptional in his academic pursuits. Indeed, at this year’s prize giving ceremony, he received the ‘Award for Outstanding Academic Performance’. His favourite subjects are English, Mathematics, Art, Reading and Writing and Science. His other hobbies are travelling, playing tennis and skateboarding.
